Josh Rousculp will speak Monday at Heritage University about his experiences living in the Dominican Republic. Rousculp has been working with children, youth and their teachers to establish a culture of reading and literacy. While books are a rarity on the island--especially children's books--Rousculp is working to change that in his current community, San Francisco de Macoris.
Named after his wife's grandfather, a world-renowned otolaryngologist and inventor of the cochlear implant, Biblioteca Comunitaria Dr. William House (Dr. William House Community Library) is set to open in a community space in May. The library and its programs have been running mostly out of Rousculp's home, neighbor's homes and local schools.
Rousculp is currently running a crowd-source funding campaign to open the library and run its programs for one year. The space and services will thereafter be sustained by volunteers and paid English services which are in high demand in the area. Social entrepreneurship is an up and coming field gaining significant momentum with younger generations who desire both to do good in the world and make money doing it.
