White Pelicans on the Yakima River

Today on the canyon road halfway between Yakima and Ellensburg more than 5 cars at any given time stopped for a rather unusual site. A flock of 20 white pelicans gathered for a nice dip in the Yakima River. More members of the flock continued to come in for a landing. A few of the local fowl also joined in the river party. Seems the lack of spring weather isn't keeping these inhabitants from taking advantage of a Saturday afternoon.

I've never seen these birds before. How nice to see them. I guess I should take more drives up the canyon road. Thank you for sharing.

The pelicans love eating the salmon the are traveling to their spawning places. They attract more and more each year. At Prosser you can see the many birds just waiting to get a fish.

I drive to Patterson almost every day five days a week. For the last two years these pelicans have gotten worse,do you realize how many fish they eay a day. Given this fact plus the sealions our return fish population is being depleated . Bad news.
