Team Work Building

JROTC tradition to end in West Valley?

In these times where young adults in the valley are searching for acceptance and group approval the choices other than gangs are narrowing.
The West Valley School District is deciding the fate of this great program that offers Team Building, Individual confidence, Physical fitness, and scholastic assistance (in the form of small group mentorship, one on one instruction, and Awards for scholastic achievements)to name some but not all of the benifits of the program.
The cost for the instructors are shared by the US Army and the WVSD. Other funds for the program are provided by fund raisers and donations like the one from the Friends of the NRA earlier this year.

It really is a shame that the School District is proposing to end this program that offers so many at risk youth and others a chance to blossom as young adults.

I have to wonder if there is a true value to purchasing newer computers or if the very large ammount set up for teachers child care isn't something that the Teacher's union could trim down on their demands and allow this working program to continue.

The board was held, the parents, grandparents, interested citizens, and the youth spoke before the board. The superintendent was given direction to save the program by finding a way to pay for the schools part of the program.

I spent 5 years in the program, and served in the Air Force for 6 years. The West Valley JROTC is an invaluable program to students for their future. I hope as many people as possible will go to the meeting and keep JROTC alive!

Going to the meeting anyway! it is at 7pm, Tuesday, May 29th room 1245. The kids are wearing a black arm band made from garbage bags to show solidarity and that they think the decision was garbage. Make your own and show support by showing up.

Update: The WV School Board has ended the program. The decision was made without allowing any public input. The decades old tradition will be ended with the conclusion of this School Year.

Please come to the school board meeting this Tuesday night at West Valley High School to oppose this cut. Parents and students are already planning to attend but we aske that the community show their support.
