Athlete of the Month for June: Zack Schrank

East Valley's Zach Schrank, Our KIMA/DQ Student Athlete of the Month for June

By Alan Sillence

Sizzling hot way to end a spectacular high school career. Cool as a blizzard, our Dairy Queen Athlete of the Month.

KIMA there in Tacoma celebrating right along with East Valley as the Red Devils dominated Aberdeen to win the State 2A soccer championship. Keeper extraordinaire Zack Schrank pitching yet another shutout.

"It's hard to explain because we waited our whole lives to win that state championship. Worked so hard, worked for four years on varsity," says Zack Schrank. "Just a great experience to have that."

That championship experience made possible much in part by the guy in goal. East Valley's Zach Schrank, never getting a lot of publicity in that position. Never complaining about it. Just going about the business of leading his team to the promised land.

"He made come key saves in big games like against Quincy," says Red Devils' soccer teammate Sherlock Holmes. "If we had lost that game we wouldn't have taken first in league. Against Toppenish he made some key saves."

And, now Zach the 3.7 grade point average graduate can carry those memories with him as he marches into a new exciting phase of his life.

"I'm heading up to CWU on a three and a half year Army ROTC scholarship. And, I'm going to go from there," says Schrank.

And, it can only go up from there for Zack. No men's soccer program at CWU. Instead he'll take his four years of Red Devil varstiy football experience and try to walk on with the Wildcat pigskinners.

But, never forgetting the unforgettable experiences and guys he's shared so much with and grown up with at East Valley.

"For soccer, we've been playing U-5 since we were about six years old," says Schrank. "It's real tough just making an end because it all happened at once. But it was a great experience to share with all of them."
