Mariners caravan coming to town
SEATTLE MARINERS NEWS RELEASE -- The 2014 Seattle Mariners Caravan rolls into Yakima on Monday, January 13, in Walla Walla on Thursday, January 16 and the Tri-Cities on Friday, January 17. There are free autograph sessions with pitchers Charlie Furbush and Brandon Maurer, former Mariners player and current broadcaster Mike Blowers, and the Mariner Moose.

Over a three-week period (January 7-24), the Caravan will make stops in 27 communities across the Pacific Northwest from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver, B.C., Gig Harbor to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and points in between, presenting assemblies for elementary school students, free public autograph and photo sessions, and visiting hospitals. In addition to Tri-Cities, other stops on this leg of the Caravan include Spokane, Yakima, Wenatchee, Moses Lake, Walla Walla, and Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls, Idaho.

In Yakima, the caravan will be at the Yakima Valley SunDome from 4:30pm - 6:00pm on Monday, January 13. The Mariners scheduled to appear are Nick Franklin, Brandon Maurer, & Aaron Goldsmith.

In Walla Walla, the caravan will be at Whitman College in the Sherwood Center (Main Gym) from 4:15pm - 5:45pm on Thursday, January 16. The Mariners scheduled to appear are Brandon Maurer, Charlie Furbush, & Mike Blowers.

In Tri-Cities, the Caravan will stop off at Kadlec Medical Center (888 Swift Blvd., Richland) for a Get Well Tour from 12:30-1:30pm. During the Get Well Tour, players will visit with patients, sign autographs and pose for photos. (The hospital visit is not open to the general public.)

There will be a free public autograph session at Columbia Basin College Gjerde Center (2600 N. 20th Ave., Pasco) from 4:15-5:45pm. The autograph appearance is free and open to the general public. Attendees will receive complimentary Mariners autographs, photos with the Mariner Moose, and the chance to win great prizes.

Pitcher Brandon Maurer recorded his first Major League win on April 14 against the Texas Rangers. Maurer split time between the starting rotation and the bullpen. He spent most of June and July with the Mariners Triple A affiliate Tacoma Rainiers.

Left-handed relief pitcher Charlie Furbush had a busy 2013, appearing in a team-high 71 games. He averaged 11.08 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched and held opponents to a .199 batting average.

Mike Blowers is entering his 8th season as the Mariner television analyst. He did three tours as a Mariners player (1992-95, 1997, 1999). During his 11 year Major League career, Blowers also played for the Yankees (1989-91), Dodgers (1996), and Athletics (1998). Blowers was a stand-out at Bethel High School in Spanaway and was a Pac-10 Triple Crown winner while with the University of Washington.

During Week 3 of the Caravan stops will include Mt. Vernon, Bellingham, Blaine, Vancouver, BC, Delta, BC, Bellevue, Tacoma and Tukwila. Caravan participants will include James Paxton, Michael Saunders, Brad Miller and Rick Rizzs.
