Gridiron Preview - Prosser Mustangs

By Keith Leventhal

We continue our gridiron preview series with a look at one of the best teams in our area.

Over the last 23 years, the Prosser football team has made it to state 21 times, winning 4 state titles and finishing 2nd 4 other times.

The one connection between all of those teams was head coach Tom Moore.

But, back in Mmarch, Moore resigned as the Mustangs head coach.

Now, the new man in charge is former Prosser player and assistant coach Benji Sonnichsen.

Sonnichsen faces some big challenges this year.

Not only is he replacing a legend, but he also has to replace state player of the year Kirby Moore and star quarterback Jordan Durbin.

Even though it looks like the mustangs are undergoing some massive changes, the team is still pretty confident that they'll be back on top this year.

Prosser head coach Benji Sonnichsen says, "You talk to our senior leadership and you ask them what their goals are and what they want to accomplish and they don't even talk about winning a league title anymore, that's an expectation, they talk about going deep and playing into November and December, you know, that's what they think about, that's what they grew up wanting to do, and that's what we are going to do."

Prosser senior left tackle Kody Hartley adds, "Yeah, I think we'll go back, I mean, we got a really good chance, we got a good line and it should be a good year, I'm really excited."

The Mustangs open the 2009 season with a huge test as they host 4A Redmond.

Then, 2 weeks later, they'll get another challenge as they take on Othello.

And the first half of the year ends with back-to-back road games at East Valley and Toppenish.

Prosser then gets to play a pair of games at home as they take on Ellensburg and Wapato.

The Mustangs final home game of the year is on October 30th against Ephrata.

And the regular season wraps up November 6th when they play in Grandview.
