Welcoming the former #1 Player in the World to Yakima

Tennis players, fans, listen up. Here's a once in a lifetimer.
A former number one player in the world coming to Yakima.

Matts Wilander. The mighty swede ruled the courts throughout much of the 80's. Ranked number one in the world, Wilander won seven grand slam singles titles. Still competitive....still putting on exhibitions, and spreading the word about the sport he loves through clinics. Along with his playing partner, former Naval Academy number one Cameron Lickle........the two have been traveling the country for the past couple of years in a winnebago. Taking their fantasy camps to clubs and towns throughout America. The Wilander Express rolls into yakima this thursday for an exciting exhibition at YVCC at six pm...with dinner to follow. And, teaching clinics that morning and Friday at the yakima tennis club.
Jeff Brantner "Having this type of caliber of tennis coming into town is exciting. You don't get a chance to see this level of tennis. Small venue. And, it's going to be real intimate, accessible."
Just call the yakima tennis club for reservations and info. Mats wilander here. Awesome. If you've never seen pro tennis caliber play in person you don't want to miss this.....Check out the skills. Meet the man...he's looking forward to meeting you.
Mats Wilander "Professional athletes. Are they nice guys or not nice guys. Are they hard to get to. They even stay at work. They speak. And, I think it's nice to see people when they warm up and realize I'm just a normal person. I love the game of tennis. And, I love to teach."
Stephen Welt, for years a tennis pro in southern California, just moved here. The new manager of the Yakima tennis club...only been on the job a week...with vivid memories of Wilander back in the day mezmorizing fans at Welt's hometown club.
Stephen Welt "When I heard the news he was coming a month or so ago I moved heaven and earth to get here as quickly as I could. He's a great guy. He's going to bring a lot of excitement to the Yakima Tennis Club, to Yakima. And, you say you had a personal experience with him? He doesn't know about it. He doesn't know about it but I grew up in London and that's where he used to come and practice before Wimbledon with Bjorn Borg, Michael Perfore, all the Swedish guys. Definitely fond memories for me."
