CWU shortstop Samantha Petrich named the Region Player of the Year

PETRICH NAMED DAKTRONICS DIVISION II WEST REGION PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Haupert Also Selected to All-Region First Team

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (May 18) -- Central Washington University senior shortstop Samantha Petrich (Chehalis, Wash./W.F. West HS) has been named the 2011 Daktronics, Inc. Division II West Region Softball Player of the Year, announced Wednesday.

Joining Petrich on the all-region first team was senior third baseman Kelsey Haupert (Olympia, Wash./Black Hills HS), who earned all-region honors for the second straight year.

Petrich, who previously was tabbed as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, finished her senior season with league-leading averages for batting (.455) and on-base percentage (.579), setting a conference record in the latter. She finished with 10 doubles, 13 home runs, and 41 runs batted in and had a .942 fielding percentage in 46 games at shortstop.

Haupert was also selected to the Daktronics first team after posting impressive offensive numbers. The former Purdue University standout finished the regular season as the NCAA Division II national co-leader in home runs, eventually totaling 21 round-trippers with 53 runs batted in and a .451 batting average. Her .948 slugging percentage was a school and GNAC record.

Only two other Great Northwest Athletic Conference players -- both from Western Washington -- were selected to the Daktronics, Inc. all-region team. Pitcher Erika Quint was a first-team selection, while outfielder Michelle Wrigley finished with second-team all-region honors.

With their first-team all-West Region selections, Petrich and Haupert will advance to the Daktronics All-American ballot, with All-American honors expected to be announced next Wednesday (May 25).

Central Washington finished the 2011 season with a 34-16 record, winning its second consecutive GNAC championship and qualifying for the NCAA Division II tournament for the second straight season.
