CWU Wildcats Add to their V-Ball Power

ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Apr. 14) -- Cheltzie Williams and Lauren Herseth have signed to join the Central Washington University women’s volleyball team as incoming freshmen this fall, CWU head coach Mario Andaya announced Thursday.

Williams and Herseth are currently seniors at Twin Falls High School (Idaho) and Olympia High School, respectively.

Williams started for four seasons as a middle blocker at Twin Falls. She was named the Great Basin Conference Player of the Year each of her final two seasons with the Bruins, while also earning first-team all-GBC honors as a sophomore. Williams, who totaled more than 1,100 kills over her four-year volleyball career at Twin Falls, has also been a track and field standout, totaling five top-four event finishes at the IHSAA state track and field championships during her prep career.

“Whenever you get a player who can be a difference-maker just by their athleticism, your team improves immediately,” Andaya explained. “Cheltzie just made our team better. She is an amazing athlete who can play multiple offensive positions, and is a big block. She can jump and has a rocket arm.”

Herseth was a three-year letter winner as an outside hitter at Olympia. Among her many accolades as a senior, she was a Class 4A all-state selection, was named to the Tacoma News Tribune All-Area first team, and was the Narrows League Most Valuable Player. Herseth helped the Bears to Narrows League titles and Class 4A state tournament trophies in each of her three seasons.

“Lauren can pass, hit, and flat-out defend,” Andaya said. “She is a proven winner and can elevate a team’s play in a number of ways.”

The duo of Williams and Herseth join a 2011 incoming class that also four other high school seniors during the early signing period.
