Baseball after the Bears!

The Bears won't be back next year.

But, it is looking good for baseball at County Stadium in 2013.

Todd Lyons "Now fans, here is tonight's starting lineup for your Yakima Bears..."

Todd Lyons, the long time public address voice at Bears games.....and, my vote to be that same familiar voice of reason for next year's team at County Stadium. Not enough fans in the stands to keep the Bears from losing money another year in Yakima. We're hoping loyal folks here will come out and support college summer league baseball at the friendly confines in '13.

Fan "Oh, that would be great."

Fan 'I would support any baseball. Life after the Bears, ya. It wouldn't be quite this level. I would like pro but college I would support."

They support their guys in Walla Walla. They love the Sweets, in the West Coast League. Teams that include Wenatchee and Medford, Oregon....sporting rosters of off season college players from schools such as Washington State and Gonzaga...northwest talent which would be a natural draw here. The West Coast League currently has 11 teams and would love to even up that total at a dozen with a club in Yakima. There are reportedly interested local ownership groups. And, there have been talks with the State Fair Park people here who run County Stadium. As State Fair boss Greg Stewart told me today....bringing a college summer franchise to Yakima is one of the options they are exploring.

It would be an option fans I've talked to ....after wiping away the tears at the end of this final Bears season.......would be whole heartedly smiling about opening day next year.

Fan "Definitely, no questions asked. Because it's baseball. It wouldn't be quite this level. I realize that. But, it would be entertainment for the family. And, that's what we need."
