YAKIMA, Wash. -- A surprising thrift store discovery has a local woman asking for help.

Saundrasue Harvey lives in Yakima's Sun Tower retirement home. She found an old jewelry box in the basement thrift store. It had a military Good Conduct Medal and an old letter written by its owner.

Private John F. Champion wrote about the hard times at sea during World War II. The Yakima native died in 2009.

"I think that this gentleman is a vet, and he needs to be honored in some way by his family or something," said Saundrasue. "But, I just can't let it go and let it be thrown away like that."

Saundrasue hopes a relative comes forward to claim the medal.
