YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Yakima student is a 2014 National Scholastic All-Star Award winner. Seventh-grader Lisette Cortes was recognized for her major improvement in reading.

Lisette's been part of the READ 180 program at Washington Middle School. The program's goal is to accelerate students' reading skills.

KIMA looked at data for the program at the Yakima School District for the first semester of this school year. Almost 80 percent of students in the program maintained their performance level. 20 percent are at an improved level, while 2 percent declined performance level.

"When I started improving a little, I wanted to improve a lot, and my teacher had a scoring sheet to get a trophy, and I wanted to get the trophy,” said Lisette.

"To see a student make so much progress in one year makes you feel really good," said READ 180 teacher Heather Harris.

READ 180 is available for sixth- to ninth-graders at the Yakima School District.
