YAKIMA, Wash. -- Parents and their children gathered at Owens Cycle in Yakima for some tips on staying safe this Halloween.

The Yakima Police Department and Upper Valley safety agencies hosted the Halloween Safety Trunk or Treat, dishing out safety tips and plenty of candy.

The kids showed up in costume and officers decorated their vans.

Twelve-year old Alex Verstrate brought along his nieces for some safety education. "So that way, you know, they know that if a car is coming by, you stop and wait for the car to come by, and if there's anywhere they can't see you, try and stay out of their way," he said.

Local fire department and ambulance service personnel were also at the event.
