Yakima public housing to allow private investors

Yakima public housing to allow private investors
YAKIMA, Wash. -- You might soon be allowed to invest private money in new forms of public housing.

A change in state law basically merges section eight and section nine housing.

Currently, section eight housing allows private investments while section nine is entirely publicly-funded.

The goal is to get investors to boost the local economy by improving section nine housing.

A tenant we spoke with is open to the idea.

I think it's much better because how public housing is right now they don't have so many funds right now, if they switch it to section 8 they're gonna have more funding and that means they'll have more money to fix everything up," Maria Oroczo said.

The Rental Assistance Demonstration initiative (RAD) could take effect in about a year.
