Yakima principal reads to students from school roof

Yakima principal reads to students from school roof
YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Yakima principal took literacy to new heights today. He read to students from the roof of his school.

Robertson Elementary Principal Mark Hummel dressed as Rocket Man from the roof. He cracked a few jokes and cracked open a book for kindergarten and first grade students.

The rooftop reading was Hummel's answer to a challenge from Pizza Hut. The company asked principals across the country to promote literacy among young people.

Hummel had his own reason for doing it. "It's just an example that you could and should be reading everywhere. From a roof...from anywhere you go...in the car. Anywhere you are."

The rooftop reading was done as part of National Young Readers Week.
