Yakima looks to purchase armored vehicle

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A new armored car for the YPD SWAT team could be on the way that is if Yakima decides to spend the money. It's actually a used armored car coming from Massachusetts. YPD says it would be a big upgrade to the one it has now that was built during the Vietnam War.
"Where this is going to help us is where we need to make a rescue. Let's say a citizen is shot and they're still in the line of fire. We can move in and rescue them even if we're in the line of fire. With our current one that's pretty iffy deal if we can even get it to run,” said Yakima Police Capt. Jeff Schneider.
Yakima City Council will decide next week whether to spend $127,000 on the armored car. A new one would cost $230,000.

If these were "fat times " and the city as well as the county had surplus I would say that its all good... get the best equipment the money can buy......But these are NOT "fat times" YPD complains about the wasted overtime pay to hunt down Jacob Lucey. YSO says they don't have the funding to "safely" patrol the county. This community needs MANPOWER in law enforcement.. not toys!!!!
It appears to be another unnecessary expense and the PD wants us to believe they do not have people working in maintenance that are unable to make this vehicle reliable? Really, if this is true then we need to let some people go and get qualified mechanics that know their job. If this is not true then we need out PD to stop crying wolf!
Â
they have a APC now...or Armoured personnel carrier why do they need a new one,,,save the money and put it where its need not in more equipment,,,,,
Really?! And the people are wondering where all the tax money goes.
for a 127,000 dollars you could buy a lot of replacement motors and drive trains and fix the one you have now.Â
for 50,000 you could have a bad ass motor and some trick lights and maybe some hydraulics too. Â
