YAKIMA, Wash. -- A new mapping program is being tried out by the Yakima Fire Department. The software lets firefighters know where different kinds of fires are burning.

If firefighters see a cluster of fires in a neighborhood, the department can focus on educating people there to prevent them.

The software can also help with investigations.

Firefighters say they'd like to pinpoint problem areas.

"We believe that we'll be able to use it for public education to maybe go out and teach them classes to prevent fires," said Yakima Fire Deputy Chief Mark Soptich.

The Yakima Fire Department plans to buy the software after the three-month trial period.
