YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima County said a calendar system that began in the courts two years ago was really paying dividends. The county set up what it called a "trailing" calendar for cases that were ready for trial. It enabled the court to keep track of when court space was available. Defense lawyers deemed ready for trial get a day's notice before going to court. It eliminated continuances and other delays. Administrators said a backlog that used to be 80 cases a month is now down to about two a month.
"It's speedy, efficient, justice. Instead of what we used to have of cases hanging on for years and years," said Yakima County Court Consultant, Harold Dalia.
Administrators said the system has saved about $100,000 dollars so far. It cost about $150,000 dollars to put in place.
