YAKIMA, Wash. -- Three Yakima County children will get to be police chiefs for a day: one each from Yakima, Selah and Wapato.

All of them have been diagnosed with chronic or life-threatening medical conditions. The program is designed to help children and their parents forget about their illnesses.

The kids and their families will participate in several community events during the year.

"It makes us feel that we belong in the community. It makes us feel that we are not isolated out there, that we are not alone," said David Gonzalez, father of Yakima's Chief for the Day.

The three police departments will help raise money for the winners and their families.

The winners will be sworn in during a ceremony in August.
