Suspicious fire south of Wapato destroys house, shop

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- A fire that destroyed an unoccupied house and shop south of Wapato Wednesday morning is being investigated as a potential arson.

According to Yakima County Fire District #5, neighbors reported seeing two people leave the shop in a gray vehicle around the time the fire started.

The fire was reported just before 7:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of Progressive Road. When firefighters arrived to find the metal-sided shop fully involved and fire in the nearby two-story house.

The fire was contained by 8:15, but both buildings and their contents were destroyed. The total damage was estimated at $85,000.

No one was inside at the time of the fire. Firefighters say the house had been unoccupied for several years.

Anyone with information on the fire is asked to contact the Yakima County Sheriff's Office or Yakama Nation police.
