YAKIMA, Wash. -- It's an all day event.

"My wife will get up at 10 o'clock," says Super Bowl party host, Alan Reid.

Homemade dips, appetizers and desserts, all part of a Super Bowl party in the making.

"Usually we have anywhere from 30-35 people," says Alan.

It's a large crowd that doesn't come empty handed.

"Most of the time they just bring their selves and a drink," Alan says.

But at the Reid house, getting good food and beer isn't the only concern. Getting guests home is just as important.

"I will take them home if they're drinking and most bring a designated driver with them here," says Cheryl Reid.

Cheryl may cook, but she doesn't drink alcohol. She doesn't mind getting her guests home safe, or having a few extra house guests.

"A couple of them live within driving distance," says Cheryl. "So, they'll walk here."

"Or they can stay the night," added Alan.

Sergeant Tim Bardwell of the Yakima Police department say's that's good advice.

"My recommendation is enjoy the game and if you choose to use alcohol, then be smart and get a sober driver," says Bardwell.

KIMA pulled the numbers and found that last year in Yakima County, Washington State Patrol gave out 9 DUI's on Super Bowl weekend. Only 3 of those were on Sunday. That is up though about 30 percent from 2009.

It may be because more people are planning ahead like the Reids. Because while adding layers to dips and stocking the fridge with beer is crucial, it's safety that tops everything else.
