Strong winds causing big damage
YAKIMA, Wash -- Strong winds left behind a mess to clean up around the Valley. Plenty of downed trees, power poles and telephone wires left almost 900 homes without power.
Telephone wires, power poles and tress have been knocked down around the city. For Zammie Zamarripa it's not only a nuisance, but a hazard to his safety. After high wind knocked down part of a tree in his neighbor's yard, he worries more branches will soon follow.
"Looking at all the shrubs right here down in the driveway and you can see back here where it came down,” said Zamarripa. “So I'm hoping there is a big limb there that might hit my house I'm hoping it won't do that."
The National Weather Service reported 35 to 45 mile and hour gusts with some up to 70 miles an hour possible. Zamarripa said he's definitely never seen wind like this.
"A couple of branches fell like this before but not like that," said Zamarripa.
Over by Fisher Golf course, gusts took down a giant pine tree.
"I rushed up here and sure enough it was covering the whole road," said Quintin Molina.
Crews were out all day clearing up wind damage. Close to 900 homes lost power. Most were out for about four hours.
