YAKIMA, Wash. -- It's not too soon to start thinking about this year's Relay for Life. The annual event to fight cancer is a few months away.

Event planners held a kickoff event Monday evening at the Red Lion Hotel on Yakima Avenue.

This year's theme is 'Making Hope Happen.'

Organizers hope this will be their biggest year ever and they're well on their way. They just received a $25,000 dollar commitment from Legends Casino.

"And we have a chance - Yakima has the chance to be what we call the first mega-event ever in our region. So that means we have a goal to raise over $200,000 this year which has never been done by any event in our region," said Fred Warren, Relay for Life event chair.

The Relay for Life takes place in June here in Yakima.
