No more parking problems near IKE High School

YAKIMA, Wash. -- After KIMA's story on the parking problems near the IKE High School construction site, neighbors say their streets are much safer.
Drivers working at the site were illegally parking on 44th Avenue. Yakima began towing and ticketing those cars and signs were put up to warn drivers.
Since then, neighbors say 44th Avenue looks like a street again, instead of a parking lot. People are no longer trapped in their driveways, and the streets are much cleaner.

I am a Worker on the Ike project. I have every right to park on any city street of my choice. I relocated my family to Yakima, therfore pay taxes, contribute to the local economy, etc.... I understand the inconvenience of the surrounding home owners and feel like everyone should be a little more compassionate. Reason being, I am looking at the Big Picture. A new safer extraordinary school for what I think is Yakima's future, their students. While annoying and intrusive now the school will be out of this world amazing for the kids and that is made possible let by all of our efforts...Not having to worry about petty parking issues that distracts the work that could be getting accomplished would be appreciated.
It may seem like the parking problems are over for the 44th Avenue residents, but in fact the parking problems have now shifted to another neighborhood which is equally fed up! Check 44th Avenue North of Tieton Drive and Bell Avenue, cars line the streets every morning at 6:30 on Bell Avenue on both sides of the street (which is much narrower than 44th Avenue South of Tieton Drive). It makes it hard for us to back out of our driveways, for mail delivery (mail person has to get out of the vehicle and walk the mail to several of the boxes), delivery trucks park in the middle of the road, we have now had to put up signs asking the construction workers not to park on garbage day or lawn maintenance day.Visitors have no place to park, calls to the school district go unanswered.  While I understand that parking is a problem for the construction employees that does not excuse the poor parking attitudes and etiquette that some have. Children walk to school on these roads and are forced to walk in the middle of the street, this is dangerous to all. I do not blame the workers but I do blame the Yakima School District who should have had this influx of parking mitigated through the City of Yakima land use permit process. Why was this not discussed during that process, how can you expect 80 plus people to go to a job site with no on-site employee parking? Why didn't the school district contract with other businesses or vacant parcels in the area or even the Middle School parking lot?. This parking problem is not solved yet!  Â
