NACHES -- KIMA is committed to taking action for you. We saw your emails and answered your calls about concerns over the response time to a rash of recent car prowls by an armed suspect in Naches. KIMA brought your complaints to the Yakima County Sheriff's office.

Blood splatter is all the evidence that remains in the Arthur Reyonld's granddaughter's car following a rash of break-ins in Naches last month. The damage cost the family several hundred dollars, and worse, their sense of security.

Arthur caught the suspects as the crime was in progress.

"He got out of the car, as he was getting out, I grabbed him,” he said. “I threw him on the ground. A wrestling match went on."

And the match quickly escalated as Arthur and a neighbor detained the thief.

"We were telling him not to reach in his pocket, and when he did, she would hit him on the hand,” he said. “When he did again, he came out with a knife. The knife was opened. She hit it out of his hand."

While the struggle continued, Arthur's family was frantic with Yakima County dispatchers. The family said they called right when the fight began, and are outraged the response wasn't quicker on such a dangerous incident.

"It seemed like it should have been done sooner."

KIMA took the family's concerns straight to the Sheriff's Office. Google maps say it takes approximately 23 minutes to get from their headquarters to the city of Naches, roughly 18 miles. We learned the first deputy on scene beat that by six minutes, but is that quick enough?

“3:13 a call came in, they were en-route by 3:14,” said Dave Thompson with the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.

And at the house, just after 3:30. That’s 17 minutes that even YSO said can feel like 17 years.

"When they're detaining people, it can seem like quite a long time for law enforcement to get there,” Thompson said.

The Sheriff's Office said they cover hundreds of miles, and the response was the best they could have done.

"We take into account what's on our plate as far as the calls on the screen, what's pending,” Thompson said.

But when that pending call has your life on the time, every second is crucial.

The Yakima Sheriff Office said it did take them a few hours to take a formal report from the family. They said that's because they were tied up looking for a second suspect, and treating the injuries of the one Arthur detained.
