Suspected killer arrested in Red Apple Motel murder
YAKIMA SHERIFF'S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE -- On December 6, 2013, the Yakima County Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) arrested Angel Fabian Venegas without incident hiding in a shed behind a residence in the 200 block of South Oldenway Road in Toppenish. Venegas was wanted on a felony warrant by the Yakima Police Department for Murder 1st Degree for allegedly shooting twenty-six year old, Joshua J. Mathis, on October 18, 2013 at the Red Apple Motel in Yakima.

The VCTF worked tirelessly over the last six weeks interviewing family members and associates while conducting law enforcement operations to determine Venegas’ whereabouts. Officers from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, Wapato Police Department and Yakama Nation Police Department assisted with the arrest.

The Yakima County Violent Crimes Task Force is a multi-agency law enforcement unit made up of investigators from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, Yakima Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service and Washington Department of Corrections. The VCTF is part of the larger U.S. Marshals Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force that conducts fugitive investigations for suspects wanted for violent offenses to include murder, assault, robbery, rape, drug distribution and gang crimes.

YAKIMA POLICE NEWS RELEASE -- On 12/6/13 at about 1020 hours, the Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) located and apprehended Angel Venegas at a residence in the Toppenish area. Angel Venegas was wanted in connection to the murder of Joshua Mathis on 10/18/13 in the 400 Blk N. Front St in Yakima. Angel Venegas was booked at the Yakima County Jail for investigation of Murder 1st Degree.

Narrative: At about 7:28 PM on 10/18/13, officers responded to the report of a man down at a motel in the 400 Block of No Front St. The body of a 27-year-old man was found lying in the parking lot with injuries to his chest and head. The victim was transported to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Detectives are currently working to locate and notify the victim’s family members and his identity is being held until that is accomplished.
