More trash at rest stops near Yakima a result of budget cuts

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Action News is looking into complaints we received from you about trashy rest areas near Yakima.
We discovered the Department of Transportation is having to do more with less. As the number of people visiting these rest areas goes up, so do the number of budget cuts for the department.
Our cameras found small bits of trash scattered around this Selah rest area. And while the area is not spotless, many tell us they have seen much worse.
"Hadn't really noticed any trash until you sit down and kind of look," said one visitor. "There's a bit here and there, but compared to other ones we've been to, it's a good one."
Action News did see a maintenance worker cutting the grass at the Selah rest stop. He told us it's to lower the fire risk and keep rattlesnakes from the area.
