YAKIMA, Wash. -- More people are recycling as part of Yakima's curbside pilot program.

It's been going on for a little more than a month. About half of the homes in the test area recycled during the first pickup. About three-quarters of the homes put out a recycling bin by the second.

More than 500 homes are in the summer program east and north of Kissell Park. Neighbors are glad more people are getting involved.

"I think just people are more aware of things now, of recycling and the good it does for the community and the less trash that goes into the landfill," said Ruben Ramos, a participant.

Yakima will take a look at the results of the pilot program to decide whether to expand the recycling program.
