Man charged with car prowl in church parking lot

Man charged with car prowl in church parking lot
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Police arrested a man they say tried to break into cars in the parking lot of a Yakima church - while a memorial for a local doctor was going on inside.

Officers picked up Joseph Schamanski in connection with a car prowl Saturday at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. That's where family and friends were honoring missing doctor Jay Sloop.

The Yakima Police Department also believes Schamanski was involved in a burglary shortly before at a nearby treatment facility. He's accused of stealing cereal and some peanut butter from the building's kitchen.
