Lockdown lifted for Cowiche school

HIGHLAND S.D. NEWS RELEASE -- At approximately 9:45 today, Marcus Whitman Elementary went into a lockdown because of a report of shots heard near the east playground.  Staff and students responded very swiftly and moved all staff and students to secured locations.  Emergency personnel responded very quickly and worked to secure both the building and perimeter.  It was determined that the reported shots were a result of unidentified people target practicing on private property near the school.

Staff did an outstanding job of responding appropriately based on the routinely practiced lockdown procedures.  They did everything within their power to keep our students safe.  All students were accounted for and confirmed safe within minutes of the lockdown call.

As of 11:00 am, the building has returned to its regular routine.
