YAKIMA, Wash. -- Beer brewers consider the Yakima Valley a gem. September is when most craft brewers select the hops they plan to use.

Last year, almost 550 brewers sampled more than 150 hop varieties from the Yakima Valley.

Hop Union tells KIMA the region supplies more than 70 percent of all hops in the country.

Right now, brewers from Colorado, Philadelphia and Michigan are in the area making their picks.

"We are looking for high quality aroma that will translate into the beers and make different exciting flavored beers,” said Josh Dalton from Rock Bottom Brewery.

Dalton has revisited the Yakima Valley for 15 years to find hops with a strong aroma.
