FIRE DISTRICT 5 NEWS RELEASE -- Fire District 5 was requested to respond to the 1400 Block of Lewandowski Road for a reported large haystack fire threatening additional haystacks and a commodity shed.

On the arrival of the first responding engine they encountered a 500 ton stack of hay that was burning roughly in the middle of the stack and spreading quickly to the rest of the stack.

Owner of the dairy had personnel moving bales of hay that were salvageable. District 5 units cooled the stack and protected exposures so that personnel of the dairy could move as much hay bales as possible.

It is estimated that roughly 400 ton of hay was lost. It took close to 45 minutes to slow down the spread of fire, after slowing the spread units stayed on scene to continue knocking down parts of the fire.

Once all hay that was salvageable was moved, the fire was turned over to the property owner and was left to burn.

It is believed that spontaneous combustion started the fire.
