Gun violence prompts school security meeting

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- Leaders from every school district in Yakima County met with law enforcement today to discuss school security. This comes on the heels of a lock down at a Yakima school after a gun was seen in the area nearby.
Police say a man flashed a gun at a bondsman trying to arrest him. This set off a chain reaction with a lock down at Hoover Elementary school.
After 20 minutes of being locked down, Hoover was given the all-clear to go about the last two hours of school. Parents were notified of the lock down when they went to pick up their kids.
Friday morning, school officials and law enforcement officers from all of Yakima County met to discuss implementing new security measures.
One popular option is to improve older buildings, and adjusting room locations so buildings are physically harder to break in to. Armed officials on campuses was another option discussed. Nothing will be officially decided until future meetings.

To me this a âbreath of fresh airâ given the highly political debate going on about firearms and the second amendment.
Â
I hope and pray that common sense trumps politics when it comes to the saftey of our children.

@bigiron Problem is that politicians are the ones the create the furor around weapons laws and lie to the public to get elected. No politician can keep you or your kids safe anywhere on this planet. NO amount of promised increase of Police presence can keep you safe. Just look at the time it takes police to get to the criminal with the gun in schools it even more time consuming.Â

They have to arrive in their cars one officer per car and no officer can do anything unless he has backup (Union/Federal Safety Rules). Then they have to get into protective gear and then take their "Assault Weapon" out of the trunk. And if they are a S.W.A.T. member there is special gear to put on.Â
Â
We do need to talk about a better way to keep our kids safe. Bring the cost of living to a point where Mom can teach the kids at home or have one or two qualified and trained adults in stressful environments and it would reduce the toll that a murderer creates because he knows that a gun free zone takes a while for police to get there and get to him.

The portland Mall murderer was stopped by a single citizen showing a gun aimed at the killer when he saw that someone other than himself was armed close by he ran and killed himself. I always wondered with all the people in that mall that the death rate was not higher. I found that out last week when I read the article on a Portland news website.
