Everyone escapes overnight apartment fire, except pet birds

YAKIMA FIRE DEPT. NEWS RELEASE -- At 0410 hrs this (Thursday) morning, the Yakima Fire Department was notified of a fire in the structure in the 4500 block of West Nob Hill Blvd.
Three engines, one truck and the Battalion Chief responded. On arrival, E94 encountered a large amount of fire and smoke coming from the upstairs apartment of this multi-unit apartment building.
E94 verified that all occupants were out of the building and then began a direct attack on the fire. The fire which appeared to have started on the outside of the structure, had gotten inside the apartment and into the attic. Firefighters made an interior attack and also went to the roof to extinguish fire that had extended there. They were able to extinguish the fire within twenty minutes but stayed on scene for more that two hours to investigate and overhaul the structure.
About twenty people were evacuated from the building during fire operations. All except the occupants of the fire unit were able to return. Occupant of the structure said that she was sleeping when she smelled smoke and got up and saw the fire. She was able to grab her pet weasel and escape the flames but did get some smoke inhalation. She was transported to Memorial Hospital and treated and released.
A person in the apartment adjacent to the fire unit also experienced smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown at this time. There were no other injuries.
Unfortunately, two small birds died due to smoke and heat exposure.
