YAKIMA, Wash.-- If you donated a Christmas tree to Camp Prime Time, we can tell you where it might be going. Yakima's Wastewater Division made a donation to the camp in exchange for more than a hundred Christmas trees. The department will put them in the Yakima River to help save the salmon population. The trees will provide vegetation and shelter. Design and permitting is costing Yakima $300,000. Another $475,000 to build it will come from two salmon recovery grants.
"Doing this project does many things," said Ryan Anderson, a utility engineer with the division. "It improves the salmon habitat, it decreases flood risk, and it improves water quality."
This is the first step of a restoration project for the river that will take a few years.
