YAKIMA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE -- The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office is asking for public assistance in identifying persons responsible for vandalizing seven power transformers and voltage regulators. The transformers are mounted atop power poles. Over the last four weeks the seven power transformers between Zillah and Sunnyside have been shot with firearms causing approximately forty thousand dollars in damage and repairs. The repairs include a significant amount of clean up as a result of the oil in the transformers leaking out onto the nearby ground or water source.

The damaged transformers have also resulted in at least one fire which poses significant risk to firefighters who are forced to combat a fire while not being electrocuted by mixing water with the related electrical current. The damaged transformers also result in a loss of power to residents living in the area surrounding the transformer.

It is believed that the suspect(s) are using a rifle or rifles.

In the last four weeks transformers and voltage regulators have been shot in the area of Scoon Rd and Independence Rd outside of Sunnyside and in the area of N Price Rd and East Zillah Dr which is north of Granger and east of Zillah.

We are asking the public to be aware of the problem and report any information that may assist in identifying persons responsible to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office at 509-574-2500 or Crime Stoppers of Yakima County at 800-248-9980.
