Crash sends woman, child to hospital when hit by street racer

YAKIMA, Wash. -- It took the Jaws of Life to pull a mother and her 4-year-old son out of their mangled car Thursday after police say a man racing by slammed into them on Nob Hill Boulevard.
"When I opened up the window to ask the man for his money, it just sounded like a shot gun, like right next door just a big bang!” said witness Amanda Ramirez.
Ramirez works at Burger King and heard the whole thing. Investigators say the woman was pulling out of the restaurant when another car t-boned hers.
"My heart sank, my brain froze,” said Ramirez.
Police say the impact knocked the 4-year-old unconscious in the back seat. He woke up later and was taken to the hospital with his mother.
"It scares me because it can happen in an instance,” said witness Shannon Miller.
Detectives say they were hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee and that the Jeep was racing another car down Nob Hill Boulevard at the time.
Police don't believe the driver of the Jeep actually braked before smacking right into the mother and her kid. Some witnesses tell police the driver was going in excess of 80 mph.
Yakima police say they’ll use technology to analyze the totaled cars to get a more concrete estimate of the car’s speed.
The other car in the race got away initially but police got an unusual helping hand.
A third grader who saw the two cars racing snapped a picture with the license plate included.
"They were going fast,” said 3rd-grader Luis Martinez. “And, then the white car was pretending he was going to move."
That tip led police to the other car and a second man for questioning.
"The little kid took action and I thought it was great,” said Ramirez.
Police say the Jeep's driver will be tested for alcohol and other drugs. He could be charged for his involvement in what some witnesses called one of the worst accidents they've ever seen.
YPD couldn't say what the charges could be for both men because it could depend on how badly the mother and her child were hurt.
Police told KIMA they were still questioning the second suspected driver.
tara I had a suspended licence at one point in my life it didn't stop me from driving what did however was the very real idea of ending up in jail
I am the biological mother of the victim and I pray they severly punish the drag racers for nearly taking the life of my daughter and grandson!!
THANK GOD! Still praying for both
I know the victims of this accident and just got off the phone with the mom! Son is ok
Mandatory suspension of license would be a good idea, something more than a ticket.
Hope*
I work on 16th and Nob Hill it is unreal how many cars over the years we have seen racing on NH. I hood they make stiffer penalties for street racers.
At this point I can breath a little better, mom and son are in stable condition.
Pls KIMA Action News let us knw if the Baby is ok!!! My heart aches for the family... Idiots drivers I hope they get what they deserved, playing with innocent lives horrible!!! Poor baby and mommy I hope she gets the strength to go thru this difficult time....

I feel there should be SEVERE penelties for racing automobiles!!!!!!!!!! Prayers for those hurt and involved in this tragic accident!! Scary deal for all involved!!
I drove right by this & was dialing 911 when I saw the first of the responders show up. It was an awful crash. Doors were missing on the car & you could see the toddler in his car seat. So scary as I was driving a toddler myself.
I saw all the emergency vehicles when I was driving home for lunch at 11:30.
My wife, baby and I were heading right there for a swap. I watched the Cherokee hit the other car. I ran up to try and help. All I know is that I am very sad, I see a lot of death in my feild of work, but never ready for that.
It happened around 1120, prayers for mom and baby
wonder what happened to the idiots racing?
Hope everyone is okay.
I live very near this area and racing is an issue and seeing how fast you can get from Tieton to Bonnie Doone on 24th is another.
I hope these punks who were racing are caught and punished greatly!! Too much lack of common sense these days. I really hope the lady and that baby pull through. Nothing is said about the driver that hit the lady? Hopefully he'll remember this accident and how he almost took an innocent child and mothers life (or possibly still could) & will make better decisions next time.
I was just driving on Nob Hill an hr ago...scary.
Gloria Smith Halcomb Blakley, rather have emergency vehicles take up the ENTIRE road than have lookie loos slow down to veer at the accident & cause another accident. Sadly there are residual accidents as a result of people not paying attention as they drive by the scene of an MVA. Let the first responders do their jobs in as timely and efficiently of a manner as possible. They are the trained professionals. You would want them there too if it was something you directly were involved with. You would want them to be able to focus on their tasks at hand without having to worry about idiot drivers checking out the scene & causing more chaos.
did anyone catch the idiot street racers and are they going to be punished? sent to jail?
that looks crazy
So sad prayers that everyone is okay!
I used to live in the area. Racing was and is very common.
Just seen the accident and it really bad hope everyone involved is ok
Was wondering why we have so much extra traffic up and down s.32nd.
I heard racing was the cause.
Was there seen it jeep was racing another car everone was alive when I left baby and driver were bloody from head wonds :/
Speeding was involved the jeep with another car. The lady n baby in corolla where getting out of Bk! So sad!
hopefully kima will get their facts straight this time. you guys have a problem with reporting inaccurate news
Poor baby. :(
Wish they could do something with that area. Trying to pull in or out of Red Robin or Burger King is always hard. Traffic seems to always be busy and there is always cars driving down the middle lane.... Prayers to all involved....
Oh wow! I drove by that spot not more then 25 minutes ago. It must have happened after I went by! I hope everyone is OK.
