YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- If you drive between Sunnyside and Mabton, you'll soon have to find a different way. The bridge connecting the cities on State Route 241 will close this summer.

The Washington State Department of Transportation plans to close it for three to four weeks. Crews will stabilize a bridge that engineers say could collapse.

This is only a temporary fix that will cost $350,000. WSDOT wants to replace the bridge, but that would take $42 million.

The bridge sees 4,500 cars a day. Drivers aren't looking forward to the shutdown.

"It's going to add more time, you're going to have to leave earlier, it's just going to be horrible, but it needs to be done, I guess," said Melissa Alvarez, who uses the bridge every day.

WSDOT already lowered the weight limit on the bridge from 14 tons to three tons.
