Yakima agreed to purchase 74 new vehicles in all. This way officers would have an assigned car at all times.
The goal is to deter crime. The program requires Yakima cops to monitor their police radio even when they're off duty.
The Yakima Police Union agreed to defer pay raises for two-years to pay for the vehicles. Neighbors are glad there's more watchful eyes.
"I'm glad that they are patrolling the area and if they've increased their patrols, yes it's even better for the citizens," said Jeffrey Brooks.
YPD is working to install equipment in the new cars before they're all issued.
