Grandview -- Specialist Matt Emerson has always loved this country.

Even as a young boy he had aspirations of joining the Army.

L.J. Emerson says, "He was always cutting up military weapons out of all the plywood of my shop, having war games constantly, that was his focus."

A dream and desire that came true in 2005 when Matt joined the Army right after graduating from Grandview High School.

Mike Closner his homeroom teacher says, "He had an extremely nice sense of humor he was a pleasure to be around he was a really gifted young man."

A gifted young man and son.

The Emerson's were so proud of the soldier they considered a quiet leader.

L.J. Emerson says, "He was a young man of very few words our correspondences would be, I would write a paragraph and he would say yup or ok."

Matt Emerson spent nearly a year in Iraq before he was killed Monday in the Northern City of Mosul.

His parents are grateful he got to come home in the spring for a brief vacation.

It was their final visit with their son.

L.J. Emerson says, "He ended up doing what he wanted to do and we're just proud that he had that opportunity."
