Paying to Stop Crime
YAKIMA - KIMA is following up on plans to shut down a stairway at 23rd and Lincoln. We learned the city council ok'd it, but won't pay for it.
Homeowners told me it's a a hotspot for crime. Council agreed last night to fence it off, But councilman Dave Edler suggested the *neighbors pick up the tab.
We asked how this was different than other things the city pays for to keep crime down.
" I know that we have people coming to us, we had the money available and this would have helped them. Can't help everybody all the time. Circumstances aren't going to be the same all the time but here was a case where we could and chose not to," said Councilman Dave Ettl.
For now, it's up to the homeowners to come up with the money to keep the gang bangers out of their backyards.
