Crunch Time for Local Junkyards

YAKIMA -- Local scrap yards have just a couple weeks left to junk cars from the "cash for clunkers" program.

In between cracked windows, crushed hoods, and cut-out engines, Weber Auto Parts is crammed with work.

"It's just a matter of processing and salvaging what you can," says owner Jerry Weber.

It's also a matter of working faster. As part of "cash for clunkers", junkyards had six months to destroy the clunkers.
That deadline is weeks away and many are working under the gun.

One of the most worrying aspects of the deadline is that it's forced cars to be crushed before useful parts can be removed.

As part of the program, any junkyard that misses the deadline will be fined $15,000 per car.

The government may extend the deadline. But for now, it's a mad dash for scrap yards across Washington.
