Giving Back To An Entire Community
WHITE SWAN -- A Christmas Eve party to remember for the folks in White Swan. A local family decided this was the day they would give back to the community that's given so much to them. Action News takes you to the $70,000 bash.
It's a chaotic but humble Christmas for the Wheeler Family. They're handing out sweaters, hats and presents to the entire community of White Swan.
"There's not a lot of opportunity, things are tough and tight for a lot of families. So we're just trying to give back," says Delbert Wheeler, giving back.
The Wheeler's have been giving back for the last decade handing out gifts to the needy at their home. This is the first year for the community wide event and word spread quickly. Locals were lining up, waiting for a chance to get in.
"We had kids lined up early this morning, without coats, looking in the window," says Trina Wheeler, giving back.
In a depressed community like White Swan with graffiti covered, rundown properties Christmas doesn't always come.
"Especially here in a lot of people don't give everybody a present," says Marie Ulne, White Swan local.
It was hard to miss the smiles and happy faces as White Swan kids and grownups walked away with a gift. Making people happy is all the Wheelers wanted to do this Christmas.
"We've had a lot of drug problems, alcohol problems and those things make us look bad," says Wheeler.
White Swan may be stuck with bad reputation, but today, one local family changed all that.
