CWU Bracing For Another Round Of Million Dollar Cuts

CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY -- 'It has the potential to be devastating.' That's the word from Central Washington University officials. The latest round of budget cuts could knock their budget down by $3 million, not including $12 million in tuition assistance.

The cuts just keep getting deeper for Central Washington University. After the state chopped $18 million last spring, Central must now brace for another $3 million hit.

"We're already serving more students with fewer sections than we did last year at this time," says Dr. Wayne Quirk, CWU Provost.

While class sizes are growing, staff and course selection are shrinking.
Right now all of their classes are being reexamined for efficiency. An 18 member task force is taking into account: the graudates they produce, how closely the course mirrors CWU's mission and it's financial viablity.

"It's just impossible to go to school all day and still have time for homework and work on top of that," says Jessey Allen, CWU Senior.

"It takes away for Central Washington University $12 million in state assistance," says Dr Wayne Quirk, CWU Provost.

Tuition assistance is something that will impact three thousand student's ability to stay in school.

"I pay for [tuition] by myself. I don't have the luxury of having parents or scholarships available I know a lot of students that are paying for themselves I feel bad for," says Emily Brustad, CWU Senior.

If approved, cuts like this could be the lowest blow yet to higher education in Washington.
