More money won't mean more deputies on patrol for the Yakima Sheriff's Office. And that's exactly how they want it. The Senate Ok'd 500-thousand to go the Yakima Sheriff's Office to fight gangs in the county.

But they won't be using the money for more cars on the street. YSO wants to reach out to families and counsel kids to prevent them from getting involved with gangs at all.

"Just arresting people doesn't fix people. We need a system that looks at their circumstances and reacts to that with the resources that we have available," says Yakima County Sheriff Ken Iwrin.

This new program will team caseworkers with Sheriff's deputies on ride-alongs to get to know the community. The Sheriff's Office hopes to utilize these caseworkers to help more than 150 families in Yakima County.
