Yakima --- One man had a long stay in the hospital after being hit by a car Monday night.

Police say 53-year-old Edwin Celestine was wearing dark colored clothing and had been drinking when he walked across a dark part of 3rd Avenue. The 52-year-old driver of a Chevy Blazer said he didn't have time to slow down by the time he saw Celestine. "He realized the gentleman was walking in the roadway at the last moment, struck the gentleman and he was knocked to the ground," Police Sergeant, Shawn Boyle told us.

Celestine, who is homeless, remained at the hospital as of Tuesday with internal injuries and broken bones. Police don't plan to hold any criminal charges against the driver.
