More Home Repairs for First-Time Buyers
By Ryan Simms
YAKIMA -- It's one of the most exciting parts of owning a home... fixing it up, and making it yours.
In the middle of Home Depot, you'll find Joe Tucker searching for the perfect shade of paint. He is one of the many people who have received a tax credit for the government's first-time home buyer's program, and it's allowed him to buy a lot of things around the store. "It's going to pay for all my landscaping, from the sod to the lumber we bought for the fence," he tells Action News reporter Ryan Simms. While the tax credit has certainly helped new homeowners like Tucker, stores like Home Depot may be benefiting the most. "It seems like a lot of younger people are coming in when they want to get quotes set up from the bank," says Home Depot's Don Hamett. So far, the most popular items for first time home buyers have been the very things that make a house a home. "They're looking for windows and doors... and sometimes they come back and buy them," Hamett says. Home improvement stores expect the flow of first time home buyers to continue, and even grow if first-time home buyer tax break is extended through April. It's already helped out Tucker; his home repairs are almost complete. "Couple of more little things, and I'm gonna call it a year," he says. |
