YPD Testing Potential Officers
By Melissa Wagner
YAKIMA - The money is in. And the Yakima Police Department is ready to start hiring.
The Yakima Police Department will use it's $1.7 million from the COPS federal stimulus money to hire 7 new officers. Those interested in becoming a Yakima police officer began testing this week. If they pass the test and a criminal background check they'll head off to the academy. " We try to get them off as soon as possible. It really depends on the state criminal justice training academy schedule looks like. Q: Will it be this year, or pushed to next year? A: It may be next year. Because I know that the state has cancelled a couple of their basic academy classes for lack of participation," said Deputy Chief Kelly Rosenow. That's because up until now, no one has had any money to hire. The federal dollars will pay for 85% of these officers salaries for three years. After that, the city is responsible for keeping them on another year. |
