Less Trash at Local Landfills

YAKIMA -- A garbage shortage may have you paying more at the dump.

At the Terrace Heights Landfill, customers are streaming in, but the trash isn't piling up like it used to.

In the past year, the landfill has seen a drop of more than 18-thousand tons of garbage.

A big reason for that decline is the bad economy.

"There's a lot less construction going on. People are not eating out and spending their money, so they don't have as many things to throw away," says Wendy Mifflin, of Public Services.

In between a discarded door, and broken beer bottle, longtime customers are noticing the empty spaces all around them.

"It definitely looks kinda empty today... there's not as much garbage as usual," says customer Ryan Butler.

To make up for that lack of trash, Public Services is bumping rates by 14-percent, which translates into a few extra dollars for customers.
