Time To Fix Broken Air Conditioners

YAKIMA -- As temperatures soar, people are rushing to fix their broken air conditioners.

It's one of the sounds of summer. Air conditioners are running around the clock. Whenever a breakdown happens, Scott Daughs is on the way.

"Everybody's trying to cool down," Daughs says. "It's just the way it is out here."

Daughs is the owner Chinook Air Conditioning. With a box of tools nearby, he's ready to deal with any problem, even as his summer workload gets bigger by the day.

Daughs tells Action News that he now receives 25 calls a day to fix broken air conditioners.

One of the calls Daughs received came from Ruth Merritt, who has suffered without air conditioning for three days now.

"We had 90-degree temperature from Sunday," Merritt says.

Daughs must improvise at times in order keep older air conditioning units pumping. Merritt's air conditioner was installed when Jimmy Carter was president.

The most common culprit for a broken air conditioner is a clogged filter. It's something Daughs encourages people to change at least once a month.

But with heat scorching Yakima for at least a few more weeks, cooler days for Daughs and his fellow technicians likely won't come until fall.
